This powerful Rocky Mountain Juniper has had several iterations as a bonsai. A difficult winter event three years back caused a brief period of branch loss and health decline. Two years ago it was potted into the Tiberio Graco sack oval container and the tree started to rebuild its canopy. We left the juniper to grow unchecked for the past two years so it could regenerate its canopy. This summer, the vigorous, elongating, spiky growth was wired into secondary pads that occupy the spaces in the canopy. Another year of strong growth with this new design direction will make this tree unrecognizable. Often times the most interesting trees go through the hardship of being a bonsai. Those that come out the other side posses a character and aesthetic that stands apart from other bonsai.
A wonderful tree, with great live/deadwood interaction, just at the beginning of a long and fruitful journey.
