The exceptionally contorted trunks of ponderosa pine are the greatest attribute of this wonderful native North American species. This particular tree has tremendous movement and irregularity, a wonderful base, and shari running throughout the entirety of the trunk. The canopy has been compressed once in an initial design pass, but there's a lot of flexibility and freedom over time to continue enhancing both the aesthetic and the compaction of design. As it stands, needle length has given rise to tremendous back-budding and the tree is set for a major jump in density and quality next year. The tree was repotted last spring and is stable and healthy in its current container for the next several years.
A wonderfully strong, interesting, and iconic ponderosa pine form with a compact root system and a lot of momentum for improvement in the near future.
