This soda fired vessel by modern artist and sculptor Jonathan Cross embodies the rugged textures and organic tones that make his pieces so highly regarded. Drawing inspiration from the sun cooked earth and rich geological features of the desert that surrounds his wood-fired kiln in Joshua Tree, California, Cross achieves a wonderful meshing of form and function in his work. Multi-day firings in the desert heat give these pots a quality and character not yet seen in the bonsai world. With plays on light and shadow combined with ever shifting textures each piece transcends the boundary of art and nature, organic versus man-made.
