Aspen are rarely found growing on their own root system that is independent of a much larger macro structure. The Aspen collected by the Backcountry Boys happens to be unique in that it did grow alone and is a standalone tree. That characteristic, paired with decades of damage from beavers make this stunted form of Populus tremuloides a spectacular and irregular broadleaf specimen.
Planted firmly in the irregular Horst Heinzlreiter container, this composition is one year into the design and already shows potential for having a very high ceiling as a broadleaf bonsai. The tremendous age, a canopy reflective of the natural growth habit, and the radical deadwood embody the western bonsai aesthetic.
As this continues to refine year in and year out, taking on the form of the wire and establishing a mature canopy, it will be a truly world-class broadleaf deciduous tree in every way, shape, and form.
