This Douglas Fir is one of those rare trees with a truly anthropomorphic quality—quirky, expressive, and full of personality. Collected by Adam Johnson from the Rocky Mountains several years ago, it emerges from its crescent container with a sense of movement and life, almost as if it’s stepping out into the world.
From the very beginning, the styling process embraced its irregularities. Each “flaw” became character, every twist and contortion adding to its story. Improvisation guided the work: the final form was unknown when we started, allowing the tree to evolve naturally. Its branching fills space in a creative, inspired way, true to the elongating habit of the species, and reveals a subtle hierarchy that balances quirkiness with structural harmony.
This tree has been nurtured at Mirai to build density and refine its form, yet it’s ready for a new chapter with a caretaker who appreciates its unique character. Here is a Douglas Fir that is rare, full of personality, and utterly alive—a tree that turns its quirks into beauty, inviting you to continue its journey.
