At 65 years old, with three years of training, this coastal cascading Shore Pine is a striking example of a tree shaped by its native environment. Collected by Bob Shimon from the northern coast of California and originally styled by Ryan Neil, it resides in a crescent Jan Rentenaar container. The tree beautifully reflects its cliff-dwelling nature, with its impressive bark, strong base, and a trio of cascading branches that highlight its coastal origins. The inclusion of a native Rhododendron, which accompanied the Pine during collection, enhances its natural aesthetic, capturing the essence of the pygmy coastal steppe unique to California’s Pacific coastline.
This composition is a remarkable example of the aesthetic and iconic value of native American landscapes. As the tree continues to ramify and expand its foliage, it will further refine its appearance. Currently, it is in a show-ready state, demonstrating a unique and creative representation of Pinus contorta.
