Nick Hopes of Maidenhair Ceramics embarked on his pottery journey with the aim of crafting exquisite vessels inspired by trees. He considers himself fortunate to have access to both a small electric kiln and a large gas kiln, offering him the best of both worlds. His preferred technique, slab building, allows him to shape the pot almost organically as he works. He meticulously crafts each small detail by hand, believing it adds an artisanal touch to his creations. While time-consuming, he feels the results speak for themselves.
Experimenting with glazes is a passion for Nick, made possible by the gas kiln's reduction firing process, which produces stunning, individual flashes of color. He finds working with flames akin to the alchemy of the ceramic world. Bisque firing in the gas kiln holds a special place in his heart, requiring great care and diligence to ensure a stable, slow, and guided heating process—a process that sets gas firing apart from electric. Nestled in the serene Spanish countryside near Malaga, Nick draws inspiration and tranquility from his surroundings, finding it the perfect environment for his craft.
